Future Endeavors

Image
I would like to talk about what my hopes are with music going forward in life. I have a few fantasies regarding music and myself that I am working towards turning into realities. The first is of myself playing piano and singing jazzy solo's as a means of entertainment in a classy, low-lit club with my future dog welcomed comfortably beside me. Another dream of mine is to refurbish an antique grand piano and to just simply enjoy playing it in my home after bringing it back to life.      Lastly, and most importantly, I want to collaborate with my sister in playing music. We haven't ever really done this in all of our lives playing music, I think it's because she feels sort of competitive towards me as her sister. I believe since we're older now and more independent that we could really enjoy music together. I imagine I'd be playing the piano while she sings along. My brother could join as well, as he plays a variety of wind instruments.     ...

Adventure

Image
I chose to share this song for a little bit of a different reason. I absolutely love the beats and the singer's voice brings a sense of calmness to my mind, it's a great song to relax to but it's also awesome for listening to with friends and enjoying each other. I wanted to focus on the chorus again (as I did in my last post)- "I feel my heart beating, I feel my heart underneath my skin, I feel my heart beating- 'cause you make me feel like I'm alive again".      Can we just talk about the utter simplicity of these words real quick? "I feel my heart beating" - "underneath my skin", this is something we can essentially feel anytime so long as we're alive. Yet, the lyrics are sung in such a way that dramatizes this every-moment occurrence into something dreamy and warm. Provoked by a certain someone, "cause you make me feel like I'm alive again", the song sings of love and the way the acceptance of it can make eve...

Confirmation

Image
The song "Confirmation" by a London-based musician called Westerman, was released in 2018 on February 14th, otherwise known as Valentines day! Knowing that as the release date adds a sort of extra sad sentiment to the song, in my opinion. As the lyrics spring to mind feelings of self-doubt and anxiety, I can only help to wonder if this was secretly written about a relationship involving love.     I listen to this song all the time, and when I do I feel at peace. My favorite part of the lyrics are the part comprising the chorus that say "confirmations easier when you don't think so much about it - trying and it just won't work, I still can't get my head around that". I've always had my own interpretation of these lyrics in particular, and it was that acceptance of self and by others will just flow the way it's meant to if you just simply let go of wanting it so much. An article called "TRACK OF THE DAY: Westerman - 'Confirmation...

Fur Elise- Beethoven

I want to talk next about my own personally journey in the world of music. My sister was the first of the two of us to get into music lessons, she learned guitar for a while and then found interest in vocals and began taking singing lessons. She has an incredible voice and it thrived in a trained environment. My mom became good friends with her music teacher, Mrs. Trace. I remember the day it was decided I had to take music lessons too. I was in the second grade, at home in my room playing Bratz dolls with my sister, when I heard my mom call me to the table in the living room. Mrs. Trace was enjoying lunch with her and they explained to me that it was time for me to decide what I wanted to learn to play- I chose piano.  It turned out I was "a natural". Nobody ever had to tell me to practice when I got home, I ran straight to the piano. I think it helped that I built a strong and everlasting relationship with my teacher. I learned how to play the song I've shared, "...

Tadow

Image
"Tadow", a song by Fkj & Masego, has got to be my all-time favorite song / music video combination at the moment. First of all, it reminds me of younger brother because he has been a part of his school's band for about three years now, playing the euphonium. He also became the leader of his instrument group, which I am very proud of. When I discovered this song had a music video to go along with it and I noticed how young the two musicians are that are playing all these instruments simultaneously- I just had to show my brother. I hope it encouraged him to stay focused in his musical studies somewhere along the lines.  If you take the time to watch the video, you'll notice how both of these musicians make their every move exactly to the same beat of the song throughout the whole thing. It's almost as if it's not possible for them to even exist off-beat, it's admirable and almost the whole reason I favor this music video over all others. If I had to chos...

Something Different- Music and Mental Health

Image
Instead of talking about my own experience or feelings towards specific songs, for this post I wanted to focus on the sort of history of emotions evoked by music through drums. Their rhythmic low-beating affects the body and mind in ways you may have felt and yet never understood. The sounds of drums have been known to release emotional blockage, as many teenagers understand in the aughts of angst, escaping to music. Regardless of the lyrical content, it's effects can be cathartic and soothing! In some cases, they are joyous outburst and expressional, while some are more of a call-and-response.       Drumming is a non-verbal and almost universal form of communication that is understood regardless of tongue or country of origin. The sound of a mourning drum is unmistakable, catholic dirges even emulate their tempo. A cry to war- like the reveille of a campsite- it shocks and calls all to action. Beyond a horn instruments' staccato, it builds and gr...

Criminal

Image
I chose to share a song by Fiona Apple, which was released in 1996, a year after I was born. I used to hear this song growing up because my mom was a fan but it wasn't until a few years ago that I watched the music video for the first time and developed my own appreciation of it. Once again I've had to share the video via link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFOzayDpWoI     This music video has a unique use of nonverbal communication throughout it's entirety. The first type of nonverbals that I noticed was the use of objectics. The music video starts off with Fiona holding a camera in front of her face as if she's snapping a shot. Then the shot switches to a stuffed animal, a car and some empty bottles which are shown separately and in that order, as if to leaves clues to the story that is her song, "Criminal". You'll notice this is incorporated into the film style through out the whole video.      The second form of nonverbal communic...
